We have a small herd of primarily Nigerian Dwarf goats. Our goats are pets & provide milk for babies of multiple species on the farm. Nigerian Dwarf goats are a dairy breed & a doe can produce up to 3 quarts of milk per day but 1-2 quarts is more common. They are small goats, only reaching 17-21 inches at maturity & they come in a wide variety of colors with various markings & they can have blue, brown, or gold eyes. Pygmies are also a dwarf breed but they were originally used as meat goats. They are very similar in size to the Nigerians but are stockier built & are typically solid colored & purebreds are always brown eyed.
Goats (does & wethers) make excellent pets and can live in a small lot or yard. They do require a sturdy fence as they can climb through wire fencing & will go over or under some other fencing. We have good luck with electric wire with our goats. We don't recommend leaving them in an area where they can get to vehicles or flower beds as they will eat the flowers/shrubs/trees & they will climb on anything in sight! They do need shelter from wind & rain. Adults can tolerate the cold quite well as long as they have adequate shelter but babies need additional heat in the winter months. They do well in the summer as long as they have plenty of fresh water & shade.
We do not recommend bucks as pets. They stink & can be aggressive when they reach maturity. We castrate all of our little boys before they go home unless they are bought specifically as breeding bucks.
All of our babies are vaccinated & wormed appropriately before we send them home UNLESS they are bottle babies under 4-6 weeks of age. We feed 14% creep feed to our goats but if you have wethers you will need to feed a goat pellet that is medicated to prevent urinary crystals. Wethers are especially prone to this & it is life threatening. They also need clean, dry hay all winter (or year round if they don't have access to pasture). We recommend worming & hoof trimming every 3 months & annual vaccines.
The goats pictured here are our breeding stock & not for sale. Available kids are pictured on our For Sale page at around 1 week of age. The goats on this page are generally not for sale but feel free to contact us if you see someone you're interested in.
